Teleradiology

Teleradiology involves the electronic transmission of medical images, such as x-rays, CTs, MRIs and so on from one location to another, for the purposes of interpretation, consultation and/or second opinion. Such transmission is carried out over standard telephone lines, local area network, wide area network (WAN), ISDN, VSAT and regular internet. The specialist could be in the same building or thousands of miles away. Hence three essential technical components are..

  • Image sending facility,
  • Transmission network,
  • Receiving / image review facility.

The digital medical images are required for this process. Images are either digitized through special scanner or modalities that are capable of producing digital images are used. Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) helps in organizing and distributing medical images.
